Legarda underscores need to empower women through digital revolution
Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda on Tuesday, March 28, said modern technology is key to making more Filipino women empowered citizens as the country starts to build a more robust digital landscape.
Legarda made the statement during the “#Women2023: Women Forging the Digital Future” organized by SPARK! Philippines, where she highlighted the importance of technology in promoting women’s active participation in shaping the Philippines’ future.
“There is no doubt that technology has significantly transformed women’s lives. The emergence of various digital platforms has provided a new space for women to voice their opinions, connect and share their experiences, find support and champion their rights,” Legarda said.
The senator further noted how technology have helped in “addressing gender biases and inequalities in various industries.”
She further cited women’s crucial role in improving transparency, accountability and efficacy in public service delivery.
This was very evident when she authored the bill that paved the way for the creation of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
“I recognize the power of these tools to advocate my causes, communicate with the people, advance policies, engage with stakeholders, and rally support for legislative efforts,” she said.
“The influence of technology on politics will continue to shape the landscape in the years ahead,” she stressed.
Legarda vowed to continue leveraging the benefits of technology to the fullest extent.
As such, citing the need to explore ways to improve digital connectivity and among communities, Legarda urged women to continue participating in digital transformation.
“As a woman, I strongly support the idea of bringing together and strengthening the relationships between people and communities. My focus has always been on promoting connectivity and inclusivity,” she said.
“It is my sincere desire to witness women taking the lead in shaping the direction of technology and the digital landscape,” the lawmaker stressed.
