Keep your cool

An old friend used to say that “the coolest place to be is your car,” but that was before the price of petrol hit the roof at P60 and up. Nowadays the place to cool off is the mall.
As long as one is able to resist the lure of impulse buying, the mall is a safe place to crawl and cool off. That was what I observed sitting at the restaurant that seemed to be at the crossroads between the mall’s dining area and its shopping zones. Entire families of parents, children, and pets criss-crossed in front of my hungry eyes (and stomach) as I waited for the ice tea to arrive.
What I saw was a moving picture of summer’s first week in a megacity where the mall has taken the place of park, church, and picnic. Today’s awesome, wholesome, mallsome venues are fully airconditioned, with parking predictably secure and generally comfortable indoors. The passing parade of mallgoers showed a discordant note, however, for as my mini survey showed, six out of 10 of them wore black, not your best or coolest summer color.
The gothic fad has been with us for far too long yet it has persisted, especially among the young who are supposed to be trendsetters, if not outright iconoclasts. With temperatures hitting the high 30’s – 34 ground temperature, 38 heat index – in Luzon and higher in the Visayas and Mindanao, shouldn’t we all be in light colors?
White reflects heat while black absorbs it, a polite way to say black induces sweating at work or at play.  White may not be the freest color to wear as stains show easily whereas black hides them; if only for that reason, let’s go white. Keep black for after-sundown and formal events, including funerals.
Meantime, it would do us a whole lot of good to see public officials minus their “americana” coat-and-tie when they’re at work or on TV. They could follow the example of Big Boss Marcos, who appears in public more often in short sleeves. A fashion tip was shared by a finance official who asked government workers to learn to live with airconditioning set at 25C as power supply begins to thin. They should be so lucky.
