ILOILO CITY—The Department of Health (DOH-6) has recorded the 12th death due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Western Visayas region.
DOH-6 Chief for Infectious Diseases Dr. Mary Jane Juanico said the region’s 12th casualty was from Iloilo City, and was one of the 68 new COVID-19 confirmed cases reported Wednesday, June 15.
The 80-year-old man from Barrio Obrero died last July 7, a week before he was found positive for COVID-19.
Juanico said in a press conference that the elderly man had swab specimen taken last July 6, but died the following day. It was not stated if the casualty had any underlying condition.
The number of deaths was relatively low in terms of the 679 recorded COVID-19 cases in the region, which is comprised of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces as well as the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.
DOH-6 noted that most new COVID-19 cases in the region were asymptomatic, and did not even require hospitalization.
Of all areas in the region, Iloilo province had the most number of COVID-19 casualties with four. It was followed by Bacolod City with three. Two deaths were recorded each in Iloilo City and Capiz province.
A repatriated overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Iloilo province also died days after testing positive for COVID-19 last June.
