'We're not out of the woods yet' Duterte ensures immediate distribution of vaccines; asks for public's cooperation

Even though the country is making progress in the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), President Duterte asked for the public to cooperate with the government as he ensured the immediate distribution of available vaccines in the country.

Duterte made the statement as he formally received the 487,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX-Facility, a mechanism led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is designed to guarantee rapid, fair, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.

In his speech in Pasay City on Thursday, the President assured the public that the government is doing its best to quickly deliver the vaccines to communities.

"I assure the Filipino people that their government will continue working to ensure the immediate distribution of the available vaccines to the communities," he said.

President Duterte reminded the public to continue observing health protocols since the pandemic was far from over.

He, however, noted that the country is making progress in the fight against COVID-19.

"We may not be out of the woods yet but we are making progress and the end is in sight," Duterte said.

"With your cooperation, we will overcome this pandemic and ensure the health and safety of everyone," he added.

The arrival of the first batch of AstraZeneca doses from the COVAX Facility brought the number of COVID-19 vaccines that the Philippines has to 1,087,200. The country has been allocated at least 5 million AstraZeneca vaccines by the COVAX Facility.

The government rolled out its vaccination program on March 1 with 600,000 CoronaVac doses donated by the Chinese government.
