VP calls for 'humane approach' in quarantine enforcement

Virus ang kalaban natin, at hindi ang ating kapwa Pilipino,” she said in a videotaped message. (To the uniformed personnel: Be calm in reminding the public the rules on social distancing. Virus is the enemy, and not our fellow Filipinos.) “Maging makatao sana tayo sa pagpapatupad ng anumang atas o tungkulin (I hope we will be humane in carrying out any tasks or duties),” she stressed. The vice president made the appeal a day after a police officer tried to arrest a Spanish national in his own home in Dasmarinas Village in Makati City. The foreigner engaged in a heated confrontation with the policemen over his housemaid’s failure to wear face mask while watering the plants in his residence. Before this incident, former soldier Winston Ragos, believed to be a quarantine violator, was shot dead by Police Master Sergeant Daniel Florendo, Jr. near a checkpoint in Quezon City. While she called for a humane approach in enforcing ECQ rules, Robredo reminded the public to stay at home and comply with the quarantine measures. “Binibigkis tayo ng iisang layunin: Ayaw nating may magdusa o mamatay, nang dahil man sa COVID-19, o nang dahil sa kahirapan. Iisa ang batayang kaisipan ng lahat ng ating pagkilos: Ang mabuhay,” she said. (We are being bonded by the same objective: We don’t want to suffer or die, because of COVID-19, or poverty. We share the same beliefs in all of our actions: To live.)
