Solon welcomes help from Chinese medical experts

Rufus Rodriguez welcomed on Wednesday, April 1 the Chinese government's deployment of its medical experts to help the Philippines' battle against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The chairperson of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendments cited as crucial the inputs of Chinese medical experts to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Cagayan de Oro Rep. He believes that the Chinese medical experts can help reduce the alarming case fatality rate in the country. In January this year, Rodriguez protested the Chinese Coast Guard vessel's five-day goodwill visit, citing the several cases of Filipino vessels being harassed and intimidated by CCG ships in the West Philippine Sea. He criticized PCG Admiral Joel Garcia for welcoming the CCG out of "diplomatic reciprocity." As of March 31, the Department of Heath (DOH) reported 2,084 COVID cases with 88 deaths and 49 recoveries. On Monday, March 30, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian, in a phone call to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, disclosed that China will deploy a team of medical experts to the Philippines upon the request of the Philippine government. "The main task of the medical expert team is to help the Philippines fight COVID-19, by providing technical advice on epidemic prevention and control, as well as sharing medical treatment experience," the Chinese embassy said in a statement. Huang assured Duque that the Chinese Embassy will continue to work closely with DOH to facilitate relevant arrangements of the medical expert team. Duque thanked the China's support to the government's battle against COVID-19 pandemic, even as he looked forward to the arrival of the Chinese medical expert team. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire earlier said they will seek the Chinese medical experts' advice on how to control the spread of the disease and lower the number of COVID19-related death.
