Senate will tackle bill creating Department of Water Resources in May, says Villanueva

  Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva on Monday, March 27 assured that the Senate will start taking up the various measures that seek to create a Department of Water Resources as soon as the Upper Chamber resumes its plenary sessions in May.    Villanueva made the statement following President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s signing of an executive order (EO) creating a Water Resource Management Office (WRMO) as part of efforts to address a “water crisis” threatening the country.    “Magandang hakbang po ang pagpirma ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos ng isang Executive Order para bumuo ng Water Management Resource Office bilang pagtugon sa isyu ng posibleng water shortage (The signing of an Executive Order by President Bongbong Marcos to form a Water Management Resource Office is a good step in response to the issue of possible water shortage),” Villanueva said in a statement.   “Sa pamamagitan po ng EO na ito, mas mabibigyan ng pansin ang mga problema pagdating sa suplay ng tubig sa bansa (Through this EO, more attention will be paid to the problems of water supply in the country),” he said.   “Bilang long-term solution, inihain po natin ang Senate Bill No. 2013 o ang National Water Act na naglalayong magtatag ng Department of Water Resources at ang Water Regulatory Commission (As a long-term solution, we filed Senate Bill No. 2013 or the National Water Act which seeks to establish the Department of Water Resources and the Water Regulatory Commission),” the senator pointed out.    Villanueva said that under the proposed National Water Act is a proposal seeking the creation of an integrated water management framework that will lay out a more concrete plan for responding to the water supply crisis.   “Layunin po nating matalakay ang panukalang ito, na kabilang sa priority measures ng administrasyong Marcos, pagbalik ng Senado sa Mayo at maipasa ito bilang batas sa lalong madaling panahon (Our goal is to discuss this proposal, which is among the priority measures of the Marcos administration, when the Senate returns in May and pass it into law as soon as possible),” he said.    Aside from this, Villanueva said he also filed Senate Resolution No. 561 to find out about the government's efforts and steps to address the possible water shortage, “especially now that El Nino is imminent.”
