Senate extends lockdown due to COVID-19 cases

The Senate will remain under lockdown until next week but regular session will continue at the session hall  Wednesday, March 17 for the consideration of franchise bills.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III said  that only a "very few" people would be allowed in the chambers' premises for their March 17 plenary session.

The Senate was placed under total lockdown after one of its employees tested positive for novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Tuesday, forcing more others to go on a 14-day quarantine. Before this, three employees of their in-house catering were found infected with the virus.

"All offices are locked down," Sotto said in a text message to reporters.

Asked when the Senate would be under lockdown, he said: "Until next week. Then will assess."

For their afternoon session, Sotto said they will just "pass a few franchise bills that we promised the congressmen to pass on second reading."
