Robredo hits 'fake news' on stolen donations for PPE

Vice President Leni Robredo lashed out at those spreading fake news about the personal protective equipment (PPE) that her office donated to front line health workers to protect them as they fight the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Robredo took to Facebook her dismay over false information that her office was allegedly stealing from cash donations of the public for the purchase of the PPE sets.

“So in the midst of this tragedy, may gana talaga mag ng fake news (they really have interest to spread fake news),” the opposition leader said in a post.
The vice president explained the purchase of the protective gears was all accounted for and it can be validated through the recipient hospitals.
“Please check our page. We have been rendering regular reports of the PPE we have already distributed and hospitals we have already served,” she said.
“Anyone can ask the hospitals directly whether or not they have already received the PPE from us,” Robredo added.
Health workers and medical professionals across the country are in dire need of protective gears, test kits, and medical supplies to stem the spread of COVID-19.
As of Sunday, 38 hospitals and community centers in Metro Manila, Tarlac, Batangas, Camarines Sur, and Quezon province have received 17,100 PPE sets from Robredo’s office.
A netizen named Jerome Tan, however, claimed the donations intended for the PPE have been stolen, citing an information from the ICA Network.
“Please stop giving donations to the OVP Leni fund. They just called looking to buy N95 masks because they can’t find any. They said they couldn’t source enough PPE locally. When I said I’ll sell to them at cost but only if they have to help me distribute in the province, they came back and said they have enough N95 mask. Yeah right. They have P21M of your donations,” the post read.
The vice president denied the allegations, noting it was Angat Buhay partner, Kaya Natin Foundation, which “pays for our orders of PPE.”
“The cash donations are not with us,” Robredo said. “The ones purchased by our office are the initial 1,000 sets of PPE which came from our P5.9M appropriation.”
