By Armando Fenequito DAVAO CITY -- Presidential son and Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Z. Duterte thanked the Bureau of Customs (BOC) -Port of Davao for granting his request to give an abandoned medical equipment shipment to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC). In a statement, Duterte said the BOC's action is laudable because the country is now facing a health crisis due to the coronavirus. "We have to come up with immediate but effective measures so we can deliver services to our constituents," he said. Duterte said usually it would take months for the processing of the release of the abandoned shipment. "We are doing a holistic approach and we need to make sure that our resources are efficiently distributed,” he said. He said his office is also coordinating with other stakeholders to provide what the health workers needed to fight Covid-19. “It is our job to make sure that our frontliners are fully equipped, " he said. On March 28, Port of Davao District Collector lawyer Erastus Sandino B. Austria delivered the contents of eight 40-foot container vans in three batches and in another three on March 29. The vans contained wheelchairs, bed-side and operating tables, dialysis chairs, medical trolleys and crutches, pharmaceutical refrigerators, and sterilizers. Austria said in a separate statement that SPMC Chief of Hospitals Dr. Leopoldo J. Vega officially received the donations on March 30, expressing his gratitude as these will augment their current medical facilities for their frontline workers and patients. Austria also assured the public that BOC- Port of Davao is on full operations despite being on skeletal work arrangements, and that they are working on the expeditious release of all commodities, particularly personal protective equipment, medical equipment, and donations arriving at their ports of entry.
