Remains of 66 OFWs from Saudi arrive this weekend

Sixty-six remains of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Saudi Arabia are set to arrive in the country this weekend.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay said the second batch of remains of more than 200 OFWs from Saudi Arabia will arrive on Sunday.

"We are looking (to repatriate) about 66 human remains, COVID and non-COVID cases," she said during the "Laging Handa" press briefing Thursday, July 16.

"We were able to repatriate the first batch last July 10, consisting of 49 human remains," added Tutay.

The first batch of remains came from Dammam and Riyadh while the second batch will come from Jeddah and other parts of the kingdom.

On July 12, the Labor department announced that the repatriation of the second batch of remains has been moved to a week in order to fly home more dead OFWs.

The arrival of their remains were earlier set on July 14.

Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the government will continue to fly home the rest of the dead not only from the Middle East but also from all over the world.
