Poe asks national gov't, LGUs, to support volunteers helping in fight vs. COVID-19

Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday called on the national and local governments to support volunteers who help those at the frontlines in the fight against coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Poe said authorities should put up a system to facilitate the "surge of goodwill" and allow the smooth passage of individuals and organizations engaged in charitable works.
In making the appeal, the senator paid tribute to volunteers who provide meals and health supplies to health workers and those in need amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
"We commend the growing spirit of volunteerism among Filipinos as the country grapples with this pandemic," she said in a statement.
"Some are doing it at individual level—providing meals, masks, alcohol, and other supplies to their neighbors and to those in need. Others are pooling resources, lending bicycles, and offering to drive health workers to their workplace," she added.
Poe also cited corporations that are also "doing their part to relief Filipinos," such as granting payment holidays, assisting their employees, and donating to healthcare workers.
"This is the Filipino at his best—giving the most to those who have the least. This is the true Filipino bayanihan spirit that has not failed to lift up the country during countless disasters," she said.
"We hope these acts of generosity continue as more of our kababayan will be needing assistance during the quarantine period and beyond."
Poe reminded the volunteers to also protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID-19.
