PNP to release COVID-19 hazard pay for cops

Archie Francisco Gamboa said that each policeman, regardless of the rank, will receive P500 per day hazard pay rate—the computation starts since the beginning of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) on March 17. Based on the memorandum of the PNP, the payment of hazard pay is only for those who are physically present during the ECQ implementation. “That should further boost the financial flexibility of our troops and their families apart from the full range of salary and allowances in April, sans any deduction for loan amortization for this month,” said Gamboa. It was recalled that the PNP leadership pushed for the suspension of the collection of loan payments for one month as a way of assistance to the family of the policemen. The payment of the hazard pay earlier became controversial after a number of policemen cried foul over what they described disparity on hazard pay rate. While soldiers and jail officers received P500 per day hazard pay, a memorandum issued by the PNP disclosed that the policemen will only receive P235 per day. The PNP’s head of the Directorate for Comptrollership explained that the reason was that their available fund to pay the hazard pay could only afford P235. The issue, however, was addressed after Gamboa requested the Department of Budget and Management for additional funds to complete the P500 per day hazard pay rate. Aside from hazard pay, salary and other benefits, Gamboa said all members of the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund will also receive P5,000 as financial assistance.
