Lt. Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, PNP deputy chief for operations and commander of the Joint Task Force Corona Virus Shield (JTF CV Shield), said that 17,039 of the violators were arrested while 3,777 of them were fined based on the penalties set by local government units in their respective curfew ordinances.
The rest of the violators, according to Eleazar, were just reprimanded but were warned of penalties if they repeat the offense.
Based on the PNP data from March 17 to 29, Eleazar said that out of the 69,089 violators recorded, 16,988 of them were from Metro Manila.
The JTF CV Shield had earlier recalled its decision to be lenient on curfew rules due to the increasing number of violators. The legal offensive against the violators, particularly the repeat offenders, were also intensified.
“Based on our assessment, the number of curfew violators will only further increase if the government will be lenient to them,” said Eleazar.
“This will definitely defeat the purpose of the declaration of the Enhanced Community Quarantine approved by President Duterte,” he added.
Eleazar said the same PNP data disclosed that a total of 593 people were arrested for hoarding, profiteering, and manipulation of the prices of medical products necessary to combat the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
A total of 6,837 public utility vehicles were also intercepted plying their routes despite the prohibition during the ECQ.
Eleazar reiterated his appeal to the public to stay home and spend quality time with their families during the quarantine period to avoid being arrested, detained, and charged.
