Philippines breaches 30,000 COVID-19 cases, after 653 new infections

By Analou De Vera Confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) soared to 30,052, after the country registered 653 new infections on Sunday, June 21, the Department of Health (DOH) said. Out of the new confirmed cases, 415 were classified as “fresh” or those who tested positive within the last three days. There were 238 “late” cases or test results released four days ago or earlier but were validated just recently. “One duplicate was also removed from total case count. The total cases reported may be subject to change as these numbers undergo constant cleaning and validation,” the DOH noted. The agency also reported 19 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 1,169. Of the new reported deaths, 15 occurred between June 3 to 16, it noted. Meanwhile, 243 more COVID-19 patients have recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 7,893. As of June 19, there are 3,099 healthcare workers that have been infected with COVID-19, of which 2,184 have recovered, and 33 have died, the recent DOH situationer report said. Also, there are now a total of 62 laboratories in the country that can perform COVID-19 testing. The DOH said that a total of 580,346 tests were conducted, while 534,019 individuals were tested as of June 19. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that there have already been 8,525,042 confirmed cases worldwide, including 456,973 deaths, as of June 20.
