(OPS / MANILA BULLETIN) "We are sad to hear that Secretary Leonor Briones is COVID-19 positive,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement Thursday. "We are praying that she gets healed from this dreadful disease,” he said. Briones earlier announced that she tested positive for the new coronavirus disease but has so far remained asymptomatic. The 79-year-old former National Treasurer and teacher said she intends to go on isolation but will continue working. Panelo has lauded Briones' work ethic, saying she is "an indefatigable and conscientious member of the Cabinet." "As expected and as announced by her, she will continue to perform her duties as Education Secretary while in isolation and despite her present illness,” he said. Briones is the second Cabinet member to get infected with the COVID-19 after Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año. The Palace earlier said President Duterte will not take another COVID-19 test since he showed no symptoms of the virus. Duterte, who recently went on self-quarantine as a precaution against the virus, remains fit and healthy to perform his duties as the country’s leader, according to Panelo.
