Over 800 OFWS return to the Philippines, DFA reports

By Vanne Terrazola Eight hundred more overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returned to the Philippines on Saturday, April 18, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said 437 Filipino seafarers from three ships of the Norwegian Cruise Line were repatriated from Miami, Florida in the United States through a chartered flight on Saturday morning. In another update, the DFA said 167 more distressed OFWs and stranded Filipino tourists from Phnom Penh, Cambodia are also homebound. These bring the total number of repatriated seafarers to over 12,600 as of April 18, said the DFA. On Friday, OFWs from Mozambique and Qatar also flew home. The DFA said the repatriates underwent the appropriate airport medical protocols and checks conducted by the Department of Health and the Bureau of Quarantine. The DFA assured OFWs of its "unwavering service" as it facilitates more repatriations. As of April 17, there are a total of 837 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections among Filipinos abroad where 106 have died.
