More than 21,000 returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been transported back to their home provinces after being stranded in quarantine facilities in Metro Manila where they underwent 14-day quarantine upon their arrival in the country.
As of Wednesday, June 3, a total of 21,424 repatriated OFWs have gone back home, the Department of Transportation said Thursday.
Of this number, a total of 5,829 were transported by land since May 25; 11,340 were brought back home using air transport since May 25; and 4,255 were ferried through sea transport since April 27.
The returning Filipinos were transported back to their homes under the “Hatid Probinsya para sa mga OFWs” Program, a joint initiative of various government agencies, mostly in the transportation and maritime sector.
Moreover, a total of 84 returning OFWs remain at the Eva Macapagal Super Terminal to take their mandatory quarantine. No one among them tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Philippine Coast Guard said.
“Today, there are no confirmed positive COVID-19 case in the quarantine facilities and the 84 Filipinos remain healthy and show no signs or symptoms of the virus,” the Coast Guard added.
Meanwhile, the two 2GO quarantine ships -- the MV St. John Paul II and MV St. Anthony De Padua -- have already been demobilized last May 31.
“With this, all repatriates from the two said quarantine ships have been transferred to the Eva Macapagal Terminal,” the organization said.
It was further disclosed that seven Coast Guard personnel have also been discharged earlier and have returned to their units with negative RT-PCR results.
Earlier, 255 individuals, who took shelter in the quarantine sites at the Port Area, have completed their mandatory quarantine and have tested negative based on their RT-PCR Test result. They were already sent home through transport arrangements jointly organized by the Maritime Industry Authority, licensed manning agencies, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Ports Authority, and the Department of Tourism.
