Number of COVID-19 cases continues to spike inside Zamboanga City jail

By Nonoy Lacson ZAMBOANGA CITY - Health authorities today, Wednesday reported 13 more coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive cases recorded in the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC). The 13 were among the 60 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who were ordered released from the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC) by virtue of court orders. This brings to 108, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases for Zamboanga City, with about 85 percent of them coming from the ZCRC. According to Zamboanga City Task Force COVID-19, swab samples were taken from the 60 PDLs Monday, and tested at the COVID-19 laboratory of the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) using the Gen Expert machine. Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco said there were still 31 PDLs with pending results at the COVID-19 laboratory of the ZCMC. Climaco said the 60 PDLs were brought to a private hotel for a 14-day quarantine by Zamboanga City Task Force COVID-19 as part of the protocol before they are sent home to prevent possible spread of infection. The mayor here said this recent development underscores the importance of mandatory quarantine and testing for newly released PDLs, to ensure they will not infect their families and their respective communities. As of Wednesday, May 13, a total of 78 COVID-19 cases were reported inside the jail facility in this city, nine were BJMP jail guards and 69 were PDLs. According to Climaco, the patients were doing well at the isolation facility of the ZCRC in this city and were being closely monitored by health authorities.
