New COVID-19 infections in Manila decreasing -- OCTA

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the city of Manila is declining, the independent OCTA Research Group said on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

“New cases in Manila have been decreasing. Weekly growth rate at -seven percent and reproduction number at 1.73. Hopefully, National Capital Region (NCR) follows this trend. Let's continue to mask up,” OCTA research fellow Dr. Guido David said in a Twitter post.

He noted that Manila had 1,210 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, Jan. 17, which is the lowest since Jan. 4.

“The seven-day average of new cases decreased from 1,985 to 1, 829, or a 7 percent decrease,” he said.

The reproduction in the city also decreased to 1.73, or less than two infections per individual, from 4.30 just a week prior, Guido said.

He said there is a strong possibility that new cases in the NCR will also decline should new infections in Manila continue to decrease.

Guido then reminded that residents of Metro Manila should still follow the public health guidelines to sustain the downward momentum.

As of Jan. 18, the country has a total of 3, 242, 374 COVID-19 cases, with 2,898,507 recoveries, and 52,929 deaths.
