Nearly 45K Baguio residents get booster doses as cases continue to rise

BAGUIO CITY – More fully vaccinated residents continue to avail themselves of extra protection against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) through booster shots.

Citing the latest data on Tuesday, Jan. 10, Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, Assistant City Health Officer, said 2,169 booster doses administered on Monday raised the city's total administered third shots to 44,953.

On the same day though, the city announced a new record high in terms of new positive COVID-19 cases at 310.

From the 310 new cases, 116 were contacts of previous patients, 37 were a result of expanded testing, bringing a total of 927 active or 2.99 percent; 29,344 recoveries (94.68%) and 722 deaths ( 2.33%) from a total of 30,993 cases since the start of pandemic.

Based on the statistical analysis of the University of the Philippines Baguio Dept. of Mathematics and Computer Science (UP-DMCS) and the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU),the city government had projected the possibility a surge of about 250 to 280 new cases daily by mid-January.

The city has not officially registered an omicron variant case as of Jan. 8 but authorities said its presence now in the city is not far-fetched.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the city is facing the threat of the Omicron variant although it is said to be less severe compared to the Delta variant.

“It is a challenging variant that is why we cannot take it lightly. While some say it is less severe, let’s not be complacent about it because it can still overwhelm our health system and it will be our greatest challenge because if our health workers are affected, the implication will be felt by other sectors,” said Magalong.
