MRT-3 resumes operations tomorrow, July 6

The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will return to operation on Monday, July 6, after a two-day suspension of its operations as part of the extensive rail replacement activities.

However, only 11 train sets—nine CKD train sets and two Dalian train sets—will be allowed to operate, from the regular 16 to 19 train sets per day.

This is in response to the recommendation of its maintenance provider Sumitomo-MHI-TESP to continue operations with reduced number of trains amid the increasing number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infected MRT-3 personnel.

To meet the expected large number of passengers, the MRT management assured that more buses under the MRT-3 Bus Augmentation Program and the EDSA Busway service will be deployed. 

The MRT-3 management will be in coordination with the Department of Transportation Road Sector, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority. 

“We will deploy 90 bus units under the MRT-3 Bus Augmentation Program and an additional 150 bus units under the EDSA Busway service. There will also be a mini-loop from Timog to Ortigas,” it said.

RT-PCR testing is still being conducted on all MRT-3 and Sumitomo-MHI-TESP personnel to determine those infected by COVID-19. 

As of Sunday, July 5, 172 personnel and employees have tested positive for the disease. 

The MRT-3 management said that infected personnel must be quarantined to prevent the spread of the virus to other employees and passengers.

In compliance with the IATF guidelines, and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, MRT-3 intensified the implementation of health and safety protocols, such as wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) by depots and station personnel, more thorough cleaning and disinfecting depots, stations and trains, and providing monitoring and screening to all MRT-3 employees.
