The extension of the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) in the National Capital Region (NCR) has been recommended by the Metro Manila Council (MMC) to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF).

According to MMC Chairman and Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez, the mayors in the metropolis have unanimously agreed to recommend the extension of the GCQ during a recent meeting.
The IATF, he said, is looking into allowing food establishments to operate at 50 percent seating capacity for dine-in customers.
“Pinag-aaralan po ng ating IATF ‘yung paano po ang pagbubukas ng economy pero not sacrificing ‘yung ating health protocol. ‘Yan po ang tinatawag na hybrid na GCQ na mayroon pong kaunting bubuksan para naman po magkaroon ng hanapbuhay or ekonomiya ang atin pong Metro Manila (The IATF is eyeing on opening the economy without sacrificing health protocols. That is what we call Hybrid GCQ where some establishments will be allowed to operate to open up the economy in Metro Manila),” Olivarez said in an interview over DZBB.
Olivarez said the mayors will be able to implement the “Hybrid GCQ” because of the authority given to them by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the IATF, saying areas not affected should continue with their economic activities.
“Kaya nga po mayroon po kaming authority na binigay ang DILG at IATF na magkaroon kami ng localized lockdown na specific area o barangay ang puwede nating i-lockdown para naman po ang mga non-affected na barangay ay hindi po ma-lockdown at para tumakbo ang economy (We were given authority by the DILG and the IATF to implement localized lockdown on specific areas or villages so that non-affected villages could continue their economic activities),” he added.
Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago, MMDA spokesperson, stressed that the MMC is just a recommendatory body, and the decision on the quarantine status will still be up to the IATF.
“This, of course, is the recommendation of Metro Manila mayors. The wisdom of the IATF will still prevail on this matter,” she explained.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Pres. Duterte will likely announce on June 15 the new quarantine classification to be implemented across the country starting July 16.
