Mayor Isko says more face masks for distribution in Manila after 1st confirmed nCoV case in PH

More face masks will be distributed to students, health workers, and residents of the city of Manila, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso announced late Thursday following the Department of Health’s confirmation that the Philippines now has its first confirmed 2019 novel coronavirus (nCoV) case.

The 38-year-old patient came from Wuhan, China on Jan. 21 and was confined in an undisclosed hospital in Manila on Jan. 25, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a press conference.

 

In a live broadcast, Domagoso said about 1,000 face masks have already been distributed to residents of the 896 barangays in Manila even before the health department’s announcement, but the city government has purchased additional face masks for distribution.

 

The local chief executive warned pharmacies and medical supplies stores against increasing the prices of face masks to take advantage of the surge of buyers.

 

“Profiteering under existing laws or rules is prohibited. If you continue doing that, we will make you criminally liable,” he said.

 

“Canceling business permits is one thing, but you can be held criminally liable if you do profiteering in this situation.”

 

The city mayor also called on restaurants to refrain from serving “exotic” food, especially those that are not cooked well.

 

“Nananawagan ako sa mga restaurant, huwag muna kayong mag-handa ng mga hindi masyadong normal, mga exotic food (I am calling out to restaurant workers, do not serve exotic food for now),” he said.

 

“We respect your culture, but please. ‘Yung mga nakasanayan niyo, baka sa inyo mabuti yan, pero baka sa pangkalahatan, hindi mabuti yan (The things you are used to may be good for you, but not for everyone).”

 

Domagoso reminded the public to always disinfect their hands, strengthen their immune system by drinking lots of water and taking vitamins, and refrain from going out, especially when sick.

 

The city mayor also told his constituents to only share verified information to prevent sowing panic among the public.

 

The local chief executive was not able to confirm whether the 2019-nCoV patient was confined at San Lazaro Hospital. However, he said that if that were true, health workers have better chances of containing the illness because the hospital specializes in infectious diseases.
