By Jhon Aldrin Casinas The Mandaluyong City government has placed selected areas in two barangays in the city under “extreme community quarantine” due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita Abalos (PNA/ MANILA BULLETIN/ FILE) Mayor Carmelita Abalos on Saturday signed Executive Order No. 7 placing certain areas of barangays Highway Hills and Mauway under “extreme community quarantine.” According to the order, the specific areas that will be completely closed due to the heightened quarantine were California Gardens, Palanca Compound, and Gueventville II. The measure also ordered the complete closure of Paete Street, San Jose Street, Silay Street, Banahaw Street, Sinag Street, Mambajao Street, and M. Cruz Street. Partially closed roads are Kanlaon Street, DM Guevarra Street, and Calbayog Street. Under the measure, all residents within the quarantine area were mandated to stay inside their homes. Entry to the areas is totally prohibited. Those exempted were medical workers and emergency personnel, employees and workers of pharmacies and supermarkets allowed to operate within the area, and barangay health emergency response teams. Also exempted were drivers and “pahinantes” (persons loading and unloading goods) of delivery vans and trucks delivering goods to establishments in the area that are allowed to operate. “All persons entering or exiting the quarantine area shall be subjected to temperature checks. Those exhibiting symptoms shall be immediately referred to medical attention,” the order reads, which was posted on the City Public Information Office's social media page. Only one person per household will be allowed to leave their home to purchase food or medical supplies as long as he or she has a quarantine pass issued by the barangay. The city government, through the barangay, will be providing food and other necessities to indigent residents of areas under the heightened quarantine. According to the measure, areas placed under the quarantine have persons under investigation (PUIs) and persons under monitoring (PUMs), which may include possible fatalities related to COVID-19, who are at serious risk of spreading the disease. “It may be the home or immediate neighborhood of the PUIs/PUMs/deceased persons, or it may be larger,” the order read. The order took effect immediately. As of Friday afternoon, the city government said there are 11 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mandaluyong, with 32 PUIs and 349 PUMs.
