Several members of transport group PISTON staged a protest near Rizal Ave. in Caloocan City on Tuesday to ask for help and call for the resumption of jeepney operations.
Jeepney, a popular public transport, drivers chant slogans during a protest in Quezon city in the metro Manila area on June 1, 2020, calling on the government to let them return to work after authorities eased measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus but a ban on public buses and jeepneys still remains. Bong Baylon, the group's national deputy secretary general, said that jeepney drivers should finally be allowed to operate again following the shifting of Metro Manila to general community quarantine (GCQ) as their industry also contributes to the economy.
(This is a protest of drivers and operators so they will be allowed to resume operations. Driver and operators are part of the economy, so we are insisting that the more than 2,000 drivers in Metro Manila should be allowed to operate again)
Baylon also said that up until now, the government, particularly the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), has not yet extended assistance to them, so they want to resume operations to earn a living.
(In April, we already gave a list of jeepney drivers to DOLE and LTFRB, but until now, we haven't received any aid yet despite the many requirements they ask of us. Where are we going to get money if we are not even earning?)
On Monday, the group also staged a protest along Commonwealth Avenue on the first day of Metro Manila's GCQ.
Some of their calls included the resumption of mass transportation and free mass testing to all drivers in the city.
