Iloilo City cancels annual sailboat race due to nCoV

By Tara Yap  ILOILO CITY — Due to the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus acute respiratory disease (nCoV ARD), the annual sailboat race of this city has been cancelled. I hope the people will understand. We’re doing this as a precautionary measure as there are already persons under investigation in this city,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas. The decision was made after Treñas consulted with the Department of Health (DOH), Iloilo City Health Office (ICHO), and Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI). The annual sailboat race along the Iloilo Strait, the body of water separating Iloilo City from the island province of Guimaras, is now on its 48th year. Activities have already been lined up for February, but were called off on the same day that the DOH announced a third positive case of nCoV ARD in the country. The city government of Iloilo is also cancelling all other major activities scheduled this month. Organizers of the annual Paraw Regatta said they will reschedule it. “Let’s see if we can do it this March,” Treñas said.
