Manila City Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso signed Executive Order No. 17, series of 2020 on Wednesday in a bid to relieve health workers who live outside the city of Manila.
"To the owners of the motels and hotels, I hope, in line with the call of the President to act in unison, in solidarity, I hope you will cooperate with the call of your city," Domagoso said in his city address on Wednesday evening.
As of Thursday morning, the city mayor said 491 health workers availed of the free accommodation.
Over 600 rooms from various hotels are now available for lodging for the frontline health workers: 421 from Sogo, 50 from Eurotel, 60 from Town and Country, 15 from Bayview Park Hotel, 90 rooms with food provisions from UN Residences, and up to 500 beds from Dormitels.ph owner and former Manila councilor Don Bagatsing.
According to the Manila Public Information Office (PIO), these hotels pledged the rooms out of goodwill and without being paid by the city government.
President Duterte placed the entire mainland of Luzon under enhanced community quarantine in light of the rising cases of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19).
Mass transportation was suspended during the quarantine, making it difficult for some health workers to go to work.
Some were forced to walk long distances from their residence to their workplace after the quarantine was implemented.
