Former COMELEC chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr., wife test positive for COVID-19
Former Commission on Elections (COMELEC) chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. and his wife, Corazon, have tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
This was confirmed on Friday (July 17) by Mandaluyong City Councilor Charisse Marie Abalos-Vargas and City Public Information Office chief Jimmy Isidro.
“Chairman Ben Abalos and his wife, Corazon Abalos, have just tested positive for COVID,” Abalos-Vargas said in a message to Manila Bulletin.
“We are now conducting tracing. For now, we would like to ask for privacy and prayers,” she added.
The councilor is the granddaughter of the Abalos couple.
It was not immediately clear how the couple contracted the virus.
Abalos Sr., 84, a lawyer and former trial court judge, served as chairman of COMELEC from 2002 to 2007. He also headed the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) from 2001 to 2002.
From 1988 to 1998, he served as the mayor of Mandaluyong City and was succeeded by his son, Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr., also a lawyer.
In a phone interview, Isidro said Mandaluyong Mayor Carmelita Abalos will undergo quarantine after she had close contact with the couple.
The mayor is the daughter-in-law of the Abalos couple.
He noted that the mayor will still continue with her duties while on quarantine as the city continues with its battle against the disease.
According to the city official, the Abalos couple are already in the hospital.
Latest data from the local government showed that there were currently 1,209 confirmed cases of COVID–19 in Mandaluyong with 786 recoveries and 75 deaths as of July 16.
