EDSA People Power Revolution: 'A reminder not to repeat past abuses committed' -- CHR

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will join in the Feb. 25 celebration of the 36th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution which, it said, “demonstrated the natural courage of Filipinos to stand up for freedom, human rights, and democracy.”

It pointed out that one thing the historic event has taught Filipinos is that they “should strengthen their advocacies and ensure that human rights abuses and violations should not be repeated.”

"Ang buo at makatotohanang pag-alaala sa nakaraan ay susi sa pagpapatibay ng demokrasya, karapatang pantao, pagtitiwala sa lipunan, at pakikilahok ng mga mamamayan, (The full and realistic remembrance of the past is key to strengthening democracy, human rights, social trust, and citizen participation)," it said.

The EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 was spurred by the death of the late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino, Jr., a well-known critic of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos. He was assassinated on Aug. 21, 1983 after he returned to the Philippines from the United States.
