DOLE: Over 100-K local workers, OFWs, affected by COVID-19

The Department of Labor and Employment said on Monday that more than 100,000 workers have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Data from the labor department showed that as of March 23, there are 111,789 affected workers, of whom 108,620 are local while 3,169 are overseas.
The DOLE Jobs Displacement Monitoring Report said the 2,317 establishments covering 108,620 workers are implementing flexible work arrangements (FWAs) and temporary closure (TC), while 3,169 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were either repatriated, displaced, or stranded due to travel restrictions.
The DOLE said the temporary displacement reports are from Regions 3, IV-A, IV-B, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12 and the National Capital Region.
DOLE data showed that NCR had the most number of affected workers with 46,213, followed by Region 3 with 21,964, Region IVA with 19,486, Region 6 with 12,470, Region 7 with 4,610, Region 11 with 1,989, Region 9 with 1,033, Region 12 with 825, and Region IVB with 30.
"Majority of the reporting establishments implemented FWAs (889) affecting 41,131 workers, while establishments which resorted to temporary closure tallied to 600 cases with 30,796 affected workers," said the report.
According to DOLE, the affected establishments were in the manufacturing and hotel, restaurants, and tourism-related sectors.
The labor department said the reports submitted by different posts abroad also showed that 3,089 OFWs are affected with 1,560 have been displaced in Macau (795), Qatar (208), Japan (135), Italy (143), Hong Kong (53), Bahrain (96), Norway (80), Spain (43), Taiwan (3), Switzerland (2), and Czech Republic (2).
There are also 521 stranded OFWs: in Singapore (300), Qatar (133), Kuwait (42), United Arab Emirates (38), and Bahrain (8).
In January and February 2020, 35,933 workers were also displaced nationwide from 565 establishments.
DOLE said the reported displacements were mainly due to permanent closure (1,868 workers or 5.2 percent) and reduction of workforce (34,065 workers or 94.8 percent).
