As of April 4, the labor department said some 102,895 formal sector workers have received the P5,000 cash assistance under the COVID-19 Adjustment Measures Program (CAMP), while close to 80,000 workers in the informal sector benefitted from the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD)-Barangay ako Bahay Ko (BKBK) program.
DOLE said about P622 million in assistance funds has been disbursed to beneficiaries of CAMP and TUPAD.
"The accelerated release of assistance came following the directive of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III last week for DOLE officials to ease the requirements in the submission of establishment reports for the processing of the cash assistance," DOLE said in a statement.
DOLE said it hopes to aid more than 350,000 formal and informal sector workers by the middle of the month, utilizing over P1.5 billion in assistance funds under CAMP and TUPAD.
To do this, the labor department said it would need another P5 billion for the remainder of the month to help more workers affected by the coronavirus crisis, the number of which has ballooned to more than 600,000 workers, based on DOLE’s field monitoring reports.
Nagkaisa calls for NTIPC emergency meeting
Meanwhile, the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition has requested DOLE to call for an emergency meeting of the National Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (NTIPC).
Nagkaisa issued the call amid the looming proposal to extend the enhanced community quarantine to fight the coronavirus.
"A number of workers in several barangays covered by ECQ have received minimal to zero assistance from government in the past three weeks," Nagkaisa Chairperson Sonny Matula said in a statement.
"We need to effectively address the health, social, and economic impacts of COVID-19 on workers and businesses," he added.
Nagkaisa proposed that DOLE convene an online meeting via Zoom or Skype, on Wednesday, April 8, at 2 p.m.
The NTIPC is a tripartite body composed of organized labor, employers, and government in the formulation and implementation of labor and employment policies.
