DOH reports 17,411 new COVID-19 infections; Metro Manila continues to see a rise in cases

The Philippines saw another 17,411 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Thursday, Sept. 23.

The country's running total is now at 2,434,753, with the number of active cases at 6.8 percent or 165,790.

About 95 percent of active cases are either mild or asymptomatic. However, 0.7 percent are critically ill, 1.5 percent are severe, and 2.73 percent are in a moderate state.

The DOH said that cases in the coming days may still increase as it reminded the public to still stay vigilant.

It said that the number of new COVID-19 infections being detected in Metro Manila is still rising.

“The case data showed that cases in the National Capital Region (NCR) continued to increase but at a slower rate,” the DOH said.

It is not yet the right time to deescalate the alert level in Metro Manila which is currently under alert level 4, the DOH said.

“We have just started implementing the pilot alert level system/granular lockdown less than a week ago. While case metrics showed a slow down of newly reported cases, the downgrading of alert levels from 4 to 3 may still be premature to date,” the DOH said.

The DOH vowed to work closely with other concerned agencies, as well as health facilities, to improve its overall response against the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the death toll went up to 37,405 —1.54 percent of the case tally — including the 177 more people who were confirmed to have died.

The DOH also reported 14,090 new survivors, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,231,558 or 91.7 percent of the overall case count.
