DOH on COVID-19: PH cases at 4,428, patients' classification revised

By Analou De Vera The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday confirmed 233 additional cases of coronavirus disease in the country. The DOH, in its latest case bulletin, reported that the total number of infected individuals has increased to 4,428. It also announced 26 new deaths among COVID-19 patients, bringing the total number of fatalities to 247, while there were 17 reported recoveries, bringing the total to 157. COVID-19 patients classification revised The DOH also said it has revised the classification of COVID-19 patients in the country. "Due to the recent developments related to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) health event, the case definitions and surveillance system for notification of COVID-19 should be revisited and updated regularly," the DOH said in its administrative order no. 2020-0013. The Health department said that it will now use the terms: suspect, probable, and confirmed in classifying patients. Previously, the DOH used the terms "persons under monitoring (PUM)," "persons under investigation (PUI)," and "COVID-positive." The DOH said it will no longer use the term PUM because given "evidence of local or community transmission in the country, its residents are assumed to have been exposed to the infection." The category formerly known as PUI, meanwhile, has been divided into two classifications: suspect and probable. The DOH said that suspect cases are those with symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing and are among the vulnerable group -- 60 years old and older, have pre-existing medical conditions, pregnant, and a health worker. Also considered suspect cases are people who suddenly develop a sudden lung problem with severe symptoms and needed to be hospitalized. Suspect cases may also be those with symptoms and has a travel history to countries with local transmission of COVID-19, or had a close contact with a confirmed or probable COVID-19 individual. Probable cases are those who have pending test results or whose tests were conducted in an unofficial testing laboratory. Individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 will be classified as confirmed cases.
