DOH logs over 4K new COVID-19 cases

The Philippines saw 4,600 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections on Sunday, Jan. 2, based on the latest bulletin of the Department of Health (DOH).

The last time that the single-day tally was over 4,000 was on Oct. 30, 2021 with 4,008 cases. As of Sunday, the country's cumulative number of infections rose to 2,851,931.

Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon remained as the "top regions with cases in the recent two weeks."

Of the total case count, 21,418 remain active or those who are still receiving treatment.

The DOH said 15,644 of the active cases are experiencing mild symptoms, 3,081 have moderate symptoms, 1,589 are severe, 769 are asymptomatic, and 335 are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, 535 new recoveries and 25 more deaths were recorded. The figures pushed the recovery count to 2,778,943, while the death toll stood at 51,570.

All Filipinos who are eligible but still have yet to receive a COVID-19 vaccine should get inoculated immediately, the DOH said.

“With both Delta and Omicron variants in our midst, we reiterate our call to all who have not yet availed of safe, effective, and free COVID-19 vaccines—do not delay any further. Evidence is clear that vaccines can shield you from severe/ critical COVID or dying,” the DOH said.

“For those who have gotten their primary series, our guidelines now allow boosting at three months for those vaccinated with AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, Sinovac, or Sputnik and at least two months for Janssen. Supplies are aplenty—vaccines are waiting for you,” it added.
