DOH logs 37,154 new COVID-19 cases

The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, Jan. 16, reported 37,154 new cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The additional cases brought the total number of cases in the country to 3,205,396.

The Health department also reported 30,037 new recoveries and 50 new deaths.

Total recoveries rose to 2,864,633 while total deaths climbed to 52,907.

The DOH said of the 37,154 reported cases today, 36,303 (98 percent) occurred within the recent 14 days (Jan. 3 - Jan. 16, 2022).

It added that the top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were National Capital Region (15,591 or 43 percent), Region 4-A (8,384 or 23 percent) and Region 3 (3,232 or 9 percent).

Of the 50 deaths, the DOH said, 30 occurred in January 2022 (60 percent), one in November 2021 (2 percent), one in October 2021 (2 percent), 12 in September 2021 (24 percent), three in August 2021 (6 percent), two in July 2021 (4 percent), and one in June 2021 (2 percent) due to late encoding of death information to COVIDKaya.

"This issue is currently being coordinated with the Epidemiology and Surveillance Units to ensure information is up to date," it said

The DOH said 137 duplicates were also removed from the total case count as 85 of these were recoveries and one is a death.

"Moreover, 27 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation," said the DOH.

The Health department said all labs were operational on Jan. 14, 2022.

"However 12 labs were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS)," it said.

"Based on data in the last 14 days, the 12 labs contribute, on average, 2.7 percent of samples tested and 3.4 percent of positive individuals," added the DOH.
