DOH: 500 patients joining the WHO's Solidarity trial; identifies 20 participating hospitals

By Analou De Vera The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday announced that an initial 500 patients will participate in the World Health Organization's Solidarity trial for potential treatments for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire (PNA) Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire (PNA/MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the 500 patients will be coming from 20 hospitals nationwide. “Naipadala na natin sa WHO kung anu-anong hospital, ilang pasyente ang kasama, gaano kadami ang pangangailangan na mga gamot,” Vergeire said. (We have sent to the WHO the names of hospitals and how many patients are participating in the trial, and how much of the drugs are needed.) Vergeire said the WHO assured them that it will ship the necessary drugs for the trial soon. "May mga plano na tayo habang wala pa yung shipment ng gamot, maari na mag-umpisa,” Vergeire said. "Gagamitin muna natin kung ano man ang meron tayong stocks ng gamot dito sa Pilipinas at papalitan nalang pagdating ng shipment galing WHO." (While waiting for the shipment, we have plans to use our own stocks of the drugs so we can start. We will replace the drugs when the shipment from the WHO arrives.) The hospitals that will be joining the Solidarity trial are: - Philippine General Hospital -The Medical City in Pasig City -San Lazaro Hospital -Lung Center of the Philippines -Research Institute for Tropical Medicine -Baguio General Hospital in Benguet -East Avenue Medical Center -Makati Medical Center -St. Lukes Medical Center Global -St. Lukes Medical Center Quezon City -University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center -Cardinal Santos Medical Center -Manila Doctors Hospital -Manila Medical Center -Chinese General Hospital -San Juan de Dios Medical Center -Diliman Doctors Hospital -University of Santo Tomas Hospital -Vicente Sotto Medical Center -Southern Philippines Medical Center -World Citi Medical Center The WHO’s Solidarity trial is aimed at investigating and identifying effective drugs that can be used to treat COVID-19. Over 100 countries have agreed to join. It involves four possible therapies: the investigational antiviral drug remdesivir, antimalarial drug chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, and antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV-- lopinavir with ritonavir, and lopinavir with ritonavir plus interferon beta-1a.
