The Department of National Defense (DND) building in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City was placed on a three-day lockdown beginning Wednesday for the disinfection of its headquarters to prevent a possible outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In an advisory, the DND said the lockdown was implemented in accordance with prescribed biosecurity protocols to give way to disinfection of its main building and premises. The lockdown took effect at 12 noon of July 15.

"Normal office operations will resume on Friday (July 17)," it said.

The lockdown came after Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana announced on Tuesday that one of his staff tested positive for COVID-19.

The COVID-positive staff joined Lorenzana in at least two official functions since last week. One was last Friday during the commissioning of the Philippine Navy's BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150), and the other was on Monday when he attended President Duterte's meeting with government troops in Jolo, Sulu.

Concerns over the possible breach of health protocols were raised after the infected staff attended functions while waiting for his COVID-19 test results.

The infected staff underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test last Friday and received his result on Monday upon their arrival in Jolo, Lorenzana said.

However, according to protocols set by the Department of Health (DOH), individuals who were tested for COVID-19 and awaiting test results should be subjected to quarantine to avoid contact with other people pending the determination of his/her health condition.

This reporter has tried to reach out to Lorenzana for a comment on the concerns but he has yet to respond to the query.

Lorenzana has subjected himself to self-quarantine while waiting for his test results.
