DILG to hire more contact tracers

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) aims to hire at least 100,000 contact tracers by the end of July.

DILG Undersecretary and spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said there is an urgent need to hire additional contact tracers to bolster the 54,042 or 3,397 contact tracing teams in the country particularly with the continued increase in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) cases.

“Araw-araw po nadadagdagan ito. May mga volunteers din po na tumutulong sa atin. Ang gusto po natin ay madoble ito, lumagpas tayo sa 100,000 (The number of (COVID-19 cases) continues to increase daily. There are also volunteers helping us out. But we want to double their numbers and exceed 100,000),’’ Malaya said.

"Ang target po sana ng DILG ay makapag-hire kami before the end of the month dahil kinakailangan po natin itong mga contact tracers na ito ma-deploy na po natin kaagad-agad (The target of the DILG is to be able to hire more contact tracers before the end of the month as we need to have them deployed immediately),’’ he added.

He stressed the priority is to hire graduates of medical-allied professions and criminology course degree holders.

If there's a dearth in applications, Malaya noted the third option is to accept degree holders of any course.

The DILG, however, is still waiting for the funds necessary for the hiring from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
