DILG rejects Mayor Sotto's call to allow tricycles to operate amid mass transportation suspension

By Chito Chavez Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary and Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya on Thursday rejected the call of Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto to allow tricycles to operate in the city to ferry health workers to their workplaces. In objecting to Sotto’s request, Malaya said the general public and not only health workers will take the tricycles to go to their places of destination. Stressing his point further, Malaya said the suspension of mass transportation which includes tricycles is a must to limit people movement as the enhanced community quarantine is implemented in Luzon due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Malaya noted that Sotto may consider other options that will provide transportation for health workers as done by other local government units (LGUs). Following the lead of the Parañaque government, Malaya said Pasig City may request private groups to lend buses for the use of the health workers during these trying times. Asserting that Sotto’s opinion is highly respected, Malaya said acceding to his request may have its repercussions as this may be a precedent that will make other LGUs make similar demands. If the DILG heeds Sotto’s call and allows tricycles to operate, Malaya said this will defeat the purpose of the enhanced community quarantine which limits people movement. In conclusion, Malaya appealed to Sotto to just support President Duterte’s call for efforts to contain the virus.
