DILG prefers home quarantine for returning OFWs

(Photo by Ted ALJIBE / AFP / MANILA BULLETIN) He noted that the LGUs have willingly accepted the repatriated OFWs unlike before when the localities had apprehensions about welcoming them home. Año reported this during the President’s meeting with the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID). Año emphasized that the returning OFWs are mostly negative for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) based on the test results after they underwent 14-day mandatory quarantine. In the event home quarantine is not possible, Año said, the isolation facilities in the barangays are available where they will be near their families. He also said 11,889 OFWs were set to return to their homes and were already booked for their travel to the provinces. Under government guidelines, all returning OFWs must undergo facility-based quarantine and PCR tests. However, several OFWs have complained of being stuck in quarantine facilities beyond the 14-day required period. With these pressing issues, the President ordered the Departments of Labor and Employment and the Department of Health (DOH) to send home the 24,000 OFWs stuck in quarantine centers within a week. Reports disclosed that some 300,000 OFWs are expected to return to the country this year as their host countries have been sending them home. Duterte also vowed to expedite the processing and release of COVID-19 test results of the OFWs. He said a fresh batch of repatriates are assured of being accommodated on their expected arrival this month and in June.
