A dejected DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño reminded rogue barangay officials that they should serve as role models for their constituents instead of portraying themselves as above the law.
He encouraged the public to report these unprincipled barangay officials so that show-cause orders may be issued to them.
In one instance, a barangay personnel from Quezon city’s third district showed a video of three barangay officials playing card games inside the barangay hall.
The barangay personnel was hesitant to report the incident to proper authorities for fear of incurring his colleague’s ire. Diño assured that due process will be followed before any sanctions are imposed on the barangay officials involved.
More than 1,000 complaints against barangay officials regarding ECQ violations have been received by the DILG.
Diño said these complaints come from all over the country and will be coursed through the DILG regional, provincial, city, and municipal offices for proper processing.
“The complaints will be subject to validation before erring barangay officials are issued show-cause orders,” Diño said.
As early as March 17, the DILG has been issuing show-cause orders against erring barangay officials.
Among the reported violations committed by rogue barangay officials are gambling and drinking liquor in public places, selling quarantine passes, and exercising favoritism in the distribution of relief goods.
“The thing Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco mentioned a barangay official who listed his name among beneficiaries of the was true. It’s a shame because those who belong to the ‘poorest of the poor’ should be prioritized,” he added.
He also assured the public that the DILG is ready to receive complaints in all its regional, provincial, city, and municipality offices, adding that they receive a minimum of 30 complaints daily.
