DFA: 48 new COVID-19 cases among Filipinos overseas: PH ambassador falls to coronavirus
By Roy Mabasa
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday reported 48 new cases of overseas Filipinos afflicted with COVID-19, even as it mourned the lone fatality in the latest tally, that of Philippine Ambassador to Beirut Bernardita Catalla.

Catalla succumbed to COVID-19 at a hospital in the Lebanese capital past midnight on April 2.
“As of April 2, 2020, 206 countries, areas, or territories around the world have confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 32 countries/regions covering Asia and Pacific, Europe, Middle East/Africa, and Americas have reported 48 new cases and 1 new death which gives a total of 448 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 121 recoveries, and 14 deaths among overseas Filipinos,” the DFA said.
Regarding Catalla’s demise, the DFA noted that it is painfully reminded that the personnel of the country’s various foreign posts “likewise face, together with all our kababayan (countrymen) abroad, the challenges brought about by this dreadful disease.”
“The memory of Amb. Catalla’s ultimate sacrifice in the service of our people will inspire those who remain to strive even harder in the face of adversity,” the DFA said in paying tribute to the fallen career diplomat.
Meanwhile, the 80 Filipinos from the M/V Diamond Princess who tested positive while the cruise ship was docked in Yokohama, Japan last February have all recovered.
