DFA: 12 Filipinos in Middle East die due to COVID-19

By Betheena Kae Unite Twelve Filipinos in the Middle East succumbed to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Saturday, bringing the total number of infected Filipino overseas to 6,140, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed. The DFA also reported that the total number of recoveries among Filipinos abroad is now 2,851, including the latest three new recovered patients in the Americas and Asia and the Pacific. According to the latest data, the most number of confirmed cases are found in the Middle East with 3,944; 1,691 recoveries; and 235 deaths. The second largest number of Filipinos with COVID-19 is recorded in Europe with 937 cases – 305 of them have already recovered while 94 died. Meanwhile, the department also said that a total of 49,520 overseas Filipinos (OFs) have already been repatriated since it began bringing back Filipinos affected by COVID-19 in February. Of this number, 58.2 percent (28,816 OFs) are sea-based and 41.8 percent (20,704 OFs) are land-based, with the most recent repatriates arriving from Canada, The Netherlands, and UAE Friday. Overseas Filipinos, who wish to be repatriated, are requested to signify their interest to the nearest embassies or consulates general in their area, the DFA said.
