DepEd: Over 200,000 learners in more than 300 schools still affected by Taal's unrest

Almost a month after Taal’s phreatic eruption, thousands of learners and personnel as well as hundreds of schools remain affected, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Based on its Education Cluster Report as of Feb. 10, DepEd data showed that 214, 789 learners and 322 schools in seven divisions under Region IV-A are affected by Taal’s unrest. A total of 7,222 DepEd personnel are also reeling from the impact of the volcano’s eruption.
Classes at all levels in one division under Region IV-A remain suspended since Jan. 13 - making 61, 613 learners in 112 schools miss their out on school for 21 days to date.
DepEd data also showed that 10, 466 learners are staying 223 public schools used as evacuation centers (ECs) in Region IV-A. Currently, DepEd said that 1,818 classrooms in seven (7) divisions including Batangas, Batangas City, Calamba City, Cavite, Gen. Trias City, Lipa City, and Tanauan City are being used as temporary homes of 12, 203 families or 44, 214 individuals.
Based on DepEd’s latest data, a total of 8, 816 learners - out of 9, 834 families or 34, 574 individuals - are staying in 1, 463 classrooms in 191 schools in Batangas. In Batangas City, there are 824 learners - out of 1, 530 families or 6, 481 individuals - currently staying in 257 classrooms in 15 schools.
In Calamba City, 31 learners - of 63 families or 200 individuals - are housed in six classrooms in two schools while in Cavite, there are 83 learners - out of 33 families or 121 individuals - staying in 11 classrooms in one school.
In Gen. Trias City, 33 learners - out 68 families or 193 individuals - are using nine classrooms in four schools as serve as temporary shelters. In Lipa City, there are 444 learners out of 184 families or 837 individuals use 34 classrooms in 8 schools as ECs and in Tanauan City, 235 learners out of 491 families or 1, 835 individuals are using 38 classrooms in 2 school as ECs.
DepEd also also continues to track its displaced learners and personnel. Latest DepEd data showed that a total of 536 displaced personnel have been tracked in 272 ECs in seven divisions under Region IV-A.
Concerned DepEd divisions have also been providing Psychological First Aid (PFA) to affected learners and DepEd has been processing and downloading funds to be used by the affected schools.
