DepEd official tests positive for COVID-19

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday confirmed that an official from the Schools Division in Mandaluyong City has tested positive for COVID-19.

 DepEd National Capital Region (NCR) Regional Director Malcolm Garma, in a text message to the Manila Bulletin, confirmed that the patient has tested positive for the disease and “was present” in Tuguegarao for the duration of DepEd’s two recent national events.

 Before the declaration of community quarantine in Metro Manila, the DepEd decided to proceed with the conduct of the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan and the 2020 National Festival of Talents (NFOT) in Ilagan City, Isabela last March 9 to 13 “since the participants are already at the venue.”

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in a separate text message to the Manila Bulletin, said DepEd is still gathering information on the patient. “We are verifying the nature of his presence in NFOT/NSPC because he is not part of the official delegation,” she said.

Briones explained that “some DepEd employees attend national events on their own for various reasons” and “this person is an example.”

Earlier, an advisory from the Mandaluyong City Schools Division Office (SDO) went viral, saying that the male DepEd official who tested positive is an education program supervisor for Filipino. His COVID-19 test result was released on March 25. According to the same advisory, the patient “has been confined in the Lung Center of the Philippines since March 15” and he is currently placed “in an isolation room.”

In the same advisory, the patient has been reportedly “cured of pneumonia although occasionally experiencing difficulty in breathing.” Overall, the SDO said, “he is recovering.”

The SDO noted that the patient’s travel history includes his travel to and from Tuguegarao City and Ilagan City from March 9 to 12. Everyone who “had direct contact” with the patient is considered a person under monitoring (PUM), and were advised to practice “self-quarantine” and report to their respective local government unit for guidance.

Meanwhile, DepEd Central Office has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
