DepEd begins assessment of schools damaged by Taal Volcano eruption

The Department of Education (DepEd) has started the assessment for immediate repair and reconstruction of damaged classrooms due to Taal Volcano’s recent unrest.

As stated in its latest Education Cluster Report on the Taal Volcanic eruption, DepEd said that, among the recent actions that the agency has taken, was starting the assessment and finalization of the Program of Works to address damaged classrooms.
DepEd’s latest data showed that that there were seven affected divisions in Region IV-A. There were also 214, 789 learners affected in 322 schools. DepEd noted that 7, 222 of its personnel were also affected by Taal’s eruption.
Classes in one DepEd division in Region IV-A remain suspended - directly affecting 61, 613 learners in 112 schools. Classes at all levels in this division have been suspended since January 13, thus, learners have lost 18 school days.
DepEd’s latest data also showed that there were 219 schools in seven divisions under Region IV-A still being used as evacuation centers (ECs). These include schools in Batangas, Batangas City, Calamba City, Cavite, Gen. Trias City, Lipa City, and Tanauan City.
As of February 5, DepEd said that 1,840 classrooms in the 219 schools are being used as temporary shelters of 12,139 families or 43,319 individuals - 10,508 of which are learners.
DepEd also continues to track learners and its personnel who were displaced. Currently, DepEd has tracked 536 personnel in 272 ECs located in the provinces of Batangas, Cavite and Laguna. DepEd has 1, 055 personnel within Taal’s 14-km danger zone.
Other actions taken by DepEd include the downloading of P1.6 million for learners’ kits to School Division Offices (SDO) of Batangas, additional P200,000 clean-up funds to SDOs of Tanauan City, and P940,000 clean-up funds to SDOs of Batangas.
DepEd, through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) also conducted Psychological First Aid (PFA) in Durungao Elementary School to address the psychosocial needs of 60 affected learners of Taal Volcanic Eruption. DepEd’s DRRMS also convened the Quick Response and Recovery Team (QRRT) Meeting to discuss the early and long-term recovery of those affected by the Taal Volcano Eruption.
Meanwhile, the DepEd Bureau of Learning Resources has also allocated books ready for pick-up of DepEd IV-A for use in designated clustered schools temporarily used as shelters. Likewise, the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration prepared also the observations and recommendations based on the inspection of schools in Agoncillo, Laurel, and Lemery in Batangas.
