The number of Filipinos abroad found to be positive for COVID-19 has reached 1,337 on Saturday (April 25), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
Department of Foreign Affairs (MANILA BULLETIN)
A total of 152 new cases, mostly from the Middle East, were added to the number of overseas Filipinos who are infected with the coronavirus. Recoveries, on the other hand, remain at 328 while death toll is at 184.
While most of the new cases were found in the Middle East, most cases of Filipinos abroad with COVID-19 are in Europe with 413 total cases. The rest were in countries in Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Americas.
“The DFA has been monitoring and compiling reports of COVID-19 cases among our overseas Filipinos since March. For the past month, an increasing trend of confirmed cases has been noted with an average of 37 cases per day, while there is a steady rate of recoveries and deaths at seven and five cases per day, respectively,” the agency said.
“In terms of regional data, most of the confirmed cases are among our overseas Filipinos in the European region, highest number of recoveries were reported in the Asia and the Pacific, and most cases of fatalities are in the Americas,” the DFA added.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Brigido Dulay emphasized that while they have been monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases of Filipinos overseas, they could not provide their identities due to privacy policies implement by the reporting countries.
“'Yung mga nagkakasakit na mga kababayan, lilinawin lang na 'yung pagbigay ng impormasyon ng mga embahada at konsulada ay base yun sa batas at patakaran ng bansa na 'yun o 'yung host country,” Dulay said in the Laging Handa press briefing.
(We just want to make it clear that the information on Filipinos who contracted the virus was given to us by embassies and consulates based on their laws and regulations.)
“Kadalasan mahigpit ang kanilang data privacy law, kaya madalas hindi binibigay ang pangalan, sinasabi lang na may mga kababayan tayo na nag-positive. Ganun din ginagawa ng Pilipinas," he added.
(Most of the time, they have strict privacy laws, that why they don't give names, they only report that there are Filipinos who are positive . It’s the same in the Philippines.)
