Cotabato City ECQ violators do push-ups as punishment

By Ali Macabalang COTABATO CITY – Law enforcers have caught dozens of violators of protocols set forth by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in this city, and penalized the offenders by making do push-ups by the roadside as city officials admitted the lack of space to detain them at local jail cells. (Photo via Ali Macabalang) A mediaman was able to capture on video a team of enforcers imposing the unique penalty on at least eight men who were caught roaming the streets without quarantine passes, and punished by making them do push-ups on the sidewalk of Sinsuat Avenue here on Tuesday. After that, they were ordered to pick up the garbage in the area. City Mayor Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi, interviewed while she, herself, was patrolling the city, reiterated her call for local residents, as well as those coming from nearby towns in Maguindanao, not to violate the city-wide community lockdown that was put in-place to help curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). “I am appealing to the mayors of such towns to discipline their residents (in coming to the city). If we arrest all of their residents caught violating our community quarantine, all our police detention cells will (be filled to the) brim,” the mayor said. Residents of nearby Maguindanao towns Sultan Kudarat and Datu Odin Sinsuat are regular and frequent visitors of this city, being an economic, social and political hub of the area.
