Cebu's BAKUD party announces support to BBM-Sara tandem

CEBU CITY — The dominant political party in the Fifth District of Cebu on Tuesday, Jan. 25, announced its support to presidential aspirant Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his running mate Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Danao City Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano, Chairman Emeritus of Barug Alang sa Kauswagan ug Demokrasya (BAKUD), said the party decided to support Marcos and Duterte-Carpio after a series of consultations with BAKUD leaders and members.

BAKUD is composed of seven incumbent mayors out of the 11 local government units in the Fifth District, including six vice mayors, 57 out of 90 councilors and 116 out of 207 barangay captains.

"In our support to the BBM-Sara Uniteam, the party acknowledges the long and tested alliance and friendship of the Duranos and Marcoses," Durano said in a press briefing in RD Hills in Danao.

"BBM is a dear friend to the party, most especially to me. I have known BBM for more than four decades. Being in the company of BBM, I have known him as a very good person. Ligdong nga pagkatawo, sa ato pa'ng panultihon. Dili palaaway at hindi mayabang (He is an upright person, good-natured and not arrogant)," Durano said.

Durano added that the party is also supporting Duterte-Carpio, considering that she traces her roots to Danao.

"As far as Mayor Inday Sara's candidacy as vice president being from the south, we can just say that with our choice for president who is from north, it's a match made in heaven," Durano said.

Durano clarified that BAKUD's move to support Marcos and Duterte-Carpio is a unilateral decision.
He said the party will support the two even if there is no guarantee that they will endorse BAKUD candidates.

"Our support is unconditional. They've been informed and it's up to them. What's important is BAKUD is endorsing them and help them win. If they will endorse us, who wouldn't be happy?" Durano said.

BAKUD President Red Durano also sees no problem with the party endorsing Marcos and Duterte-Carpio even if their rival party is also backing the two.

Red is running for congressman in the Fifth District against the incumbent Duke Frasco, who, along with his wife Liloan, Cebu Mayor Cristina, is also supporting Marcos and Duterte-Carpio.

"Politics is addition. For us, we saw that they are the most qualified to run our country. The support we are giving is unconditional," said Red.
